PE License Requirements in Texas for Civil Engineers
What the Texas board asks for, what Texas employers are hiring for now, and what those jobs pay.
JOBS IN TEXAS
Texas licenses professional engineers through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS). This site currently lists 60 open civil engineering jobs in Texas: 16 require a PE license and 5 ask for an EIT.
The rules below come from the board's own pages, checked on October 30, 2026. Boards change their rules, so confirm anything you rely on with the board before you apply.
Texas PE licensing at a glance
- Experience
- At least 4 years of active engineering practice with an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering degree, or 8 years with a non-accredited degree. The experience must show progressive responsibility in one main discipline. Supervision by a PE is recommended but not required.
- Taking the PE before the experience is done
- TBPELS publishes guidance on decoupling the PE exam from experience, and Texas EITs may register for the PE exam.
- Exams
- NCEES FE exam; NCEES PE exam; Texas Ethics of Engineering exam: open book, on the Texas Engineering Practice Act and Board Rules, taken online or downloaded
- References
- Three references from currently licensed PEs (five if you ask for an exam waiver). They can be licensed in any state.
- Renewal
- Not stated on the board's pages we checked. Confirm with the board.
- Continuing education
- 15 hours of continuing education each renewal, at least 1 of them in ethics.
- Also note
- Every degree must include 8 hours of math beyond trigonometry and 20 hours of engineering sciences.

ABOUT THIS PAGE
How we built it.
The licensing summary paraphrases the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS)'s published requirements. It is not legal advice and does not replace the board's rules. Where the board's pages did not state something, we say so rather than guess.
Job counts and pay come from the live civil engineering postings on this site. Pay is shown only when at least three postings disclose a range, using each range's midpoint, with hourly pay annualized at 2,080 hours. See the salary methodology.
